Cute cafes for chill Tokyo days - Top 5 recommended cafes in Tokyo

Tokyo is for sure a bustling city with so much to do, places to explore, and things to eat! But sometimes you might just crave a little peace and quiet, and a nice chill cafe is a perfect place to do it! Here are 5 of my top recommended cafes in the Tokyo area! I particularly liked these because they weren’t too busy so they were easy to visit and offered either a great vibe, great drinks, or both!

Streamer Coffee Company

I actually visited two Streamer locations during my trip to Japan! They have multiple locations around the Tokyo area, which is great if you want to hang out a cafe you’re familiar with.

Streamer Coffee Company Shibuya

Location: Shibuya

Great for: coffee, pastries, outlets, wifi

The first location we visited was in Shibuya which was Streamer Coffee Company. The cafe is very chill and mellow. Streamer feels like a cool cafe that you might visit in California (it actually did have a lot of California references!)

There are tables with outlets available and wifi so it’s a great place to hang out and get some work done.

Military latte

The military latte is a matcha with espresso latte and coca. This one was really good! You could taste the matcha through the espresso and it was balanced very nicely. The cocoa added a little bit of earth chocolate flavor which was nice.

California latte

The California latte is a salted caramel flavored latte. You could taste the caramel pretty well in the drink but it wasn’t overwhelming or overly sweet, which was nice!

Oreo cheesecake

This was a really good cheesecake! This isn’t the fluffy Japanese chesecakes but more like the denser Cheesecake Factory-esque cheesecakes, but they were pretty generous with the Oreos and it was really delicious

Streamer Espresso

Location: Kanda (unfortunately this one is now closed)

Great for: coffee, outlets, wifi

On our second visit, we went to a Streamer Espresso. This was a small little area located inside a department store. It was pretty empty and there were lots of seating areas with outlets. This place also has wifi so we stuck around to get some work done here.

Big Apple Latte

This time I ordered the Big Apple latte. This was interesting and I enjoyed it! I don’t typically associate apple with coffee which is what made it interesting, but it still tasted yummy, like an apple pie latte!

The barista gave us cute little cookies to go with our coffee too!

Egg Baby Cafe

Location: Ueno

Great for: egg-based food, outlets, wifi

Egg Baby cafe is a great if you love eggs! Basically everything on their menu is egg-based and it’s all delicious! The cafe also has lots of seating - there are two levels so it’s pretty spacious. A lot of their tables have access to outlets and they have free wifi, so this is a great place to hang out for a bit. They do ask guests not to stay too long if the cafe gets busy, so that’s something to keep in mind as well.

Crowd-wise, we arrived around 10:00am on a weekday morning and it wasn’t busy at all. About an hour later, the crowd picked up and all the tables got full pretty quickly. Generally, it did seem like the crowd came in waves, it’d pick up and die back down and the cafe would go back to getting quiet pretty quickly. I can’t say for sure what the weekend crowd looks like, but if Google reviews are to be believed, it can get pretty packed, so I’d try to visit on a weekday if you want to avoid too long of a wait!

Egg baby sandwich

This sandwich has three eggs in it - it has soft boiled eggs as well as egg salad. The soft boiled eggs with the jammy yolk was the perfect consistency. The egg salad was also really good and had great seasoning - this is different from the egg salads you might get in the egg salad sandwiches at the convenience stores since it has more seasonings and flavor to it.

The sandwich also came with a side of french fries which were good too! They were more on the fluffy side and not super crunchy or crispy, which I enjoyed!

Egg bacon toast

The egg bacon toast had perfectly runny egg yolks in the sunny side up eggs. The bacon was tasty and cooked well also. The toast was good, but a bit too thick. If you love bread, you’ll love it, but I thought there was too much bread, so by the end you’re just eating a lot of bread. The bread is fresh baked there so it is still really good though.

Fried egg no-bake cheesecake

This dessert was so cute! Probably the cutest dessert and worth getting just for the aesthetic. It comes in a cute little frying pan and looks like a fried egg! The “yolk” of the cheesecake is actually lemon flavored and has a syrup-like texture. This allows it to “run” when you break into it. There’s an interesting clear jelly thing covering the lemon syrup and creating the yolk shape that you have to put quite a bit of effort to break into since it has a bit of bounce to it. The “egg white” part is the actual cheesecake, so it has a thicker cream cheese like consistency to it. This part of it is more mellow in flavor and is creamy / milky. Overall, it’s a really nice light and fluffy dessert.

Egg baby pudding

This is really delicious if you’re a fan of flan! The egg custard part is really eggy and has a nice vanilla taste to it, and it basically sits in a cup of caramel. You also get a small little cup of caramel to drizzle on top of it as well. The caramel is pretty sweet and also has a slightly burnt caramel flavor, which is nice to balance out a bit of the s

Eight Coffee

Location: Shinjuku

Great for: coffee

Eight Coffee menu (as of December 2024)

This a really small and unassuming coffee shop in the Shinjuku area - you might not notice it if you weren’t looking for it! There’s not much by way of seating areas. Inside their small cafe they do have a bench where guests can sit to drink their coffee, but there are no tables available. Their menu is also limited to drinks and ice cream, so it’s not really a place where you would spend a lot of time.

Chocolate macadamia nut latte

The chocolate macadamia nut latte was really good! Maybe one of my favorite flavored lattes that I’ve tried at different Tokyo coffee shops. They also have an espresso ice cream which I wanted to try, but didn’t get the chance to. I enjoyed their coffee though so maybe I’ll be back to try their ice cream!

Tamitu

Location: Shibuya

Great for: soft cream, coffee

Tamitu menu (as of January 2025)

Tamitu is another small cafe that’s located inside of another store (this time it’s a furniture store)! This cafe specializes in herbal honeys. They have their honey available in jars that you can purchase, and you can even sample them if you wanted to learn more about the ingredients that go into them and what their different purposes are.

At the cafe side of Tamitu, you can order drinks and desserts with the option of adding one of their herbal honey flavors to your item!

Tamitu latte

The Tamitu latte is a cafe latte with an herbal honey. This was actually really good! The honey was really prominent and went really well with the cafe latte. The latte itself was very smooth and delicious! This latte did keep me up at night, so it must have been quite strong as well!

Tamitu soda

The Tamitu soda is a club soda mixed with an herbal honey. They actually drizzle the honey into the soda in front of you before giving it to you. Once you mix it well, it tastes like you’re drinking a carbonated honey drink, which is also pretty refreshing!

Tamitu soft cream

If you’ve ever had anything like Honeymee, I think the Tamitu soft cream is very similar to that. The soft cream was smooth, milky, and creamy, and the honey was nice and sweet. The milky soft cream served as a nice neutral base for the honey to stand out!

Mermaid Coffee Roasters

Location: Ikebukuro

Good for: drinks, theming

This was such a cute cafe! Their mermaid logo is so cute, and you can spot her right away from the outside of the shop as soon as you arrive.

The theming and decor of the cafe is very eclectic with lots of frames and wall art all over the walls and mismatched furniture. It has a very homey and quirky vibe to it and it feels very cozy! The cafe was actually quite busy when we visited, so we our drinks to go instead.

Cafe mocha

I ordered an iced cafe mocha. The coffee was good, though I will say I didn’t taste too much of a mocha flavor to it. The drink itself was still good and I enjoyed it!

Peach juice

Not sure if this is a seasonal item, but the 100% peach juice was really good! It was white peach flavored, which is not something I’m used to getting in the United States - usually when we have peach flavored things, they’re typically yellow peach flavored which I like less than white peach. So I really enjoyed the peach juice! It was refreshing and sweet, and very peach-y!

Cafe culture in Tokyo is pretty widespread! There’s lots of different coffee shops and cafes that you can try out while you’re there. Some of them have different themes and different specialties which is what’s really nice about them! I will say though, that a lot of cafes, similar to a lot of business in Japan, don’t tend to open very early (I feel like everything opens around 11:00AM most of the time?), so if you’re looking to get an early start to your morning at a nice chill coffee shop, your options are limited there. But if you’re just looking for somewhere nice to hang out in the middle of the day, you’ll have so many options to choose from!

I hope these spots inspire you to check out some of the coffee shops in whatever area of Japan you happen to be visiting! And let me know if you find any cute ones you’d recommend! ;)
